This two-app bundle lets students first explore where patents “live” inside real products and then step into the examiner–attorney dance to experience how strategy, cost and time shape outcomes. Used together, it builds conceptual understanding of IP landscapes and procedural decision-making, turning abstract rules into concrete, data-driven choices.

The Patent Visualiser

This is an interactive landscape tool where learners switch between an exploded-components view and a patent-density heatmap for earbuds, smartphones and smartwatches, scrub a 2020–2030 timeline, and filter by jurisdiction, legal status and assignee while an info panel reveals example patent IDs with status, CPC codes, filing and expiry years; a stats overview tallies totals, active and pending counts, expiring-soon items, a top assignee and average patents per part. These features develop the ability to interpret how patenting clusters around subsystems, compare protection across regions and life-cycle stages, and connect design decisions to freedom-to-operate questions—exactly the sort of synthesis exam questions reward.

IP Patent Simulator

This is a scenario-based game that tracks budget, stage, claim count, allowance probability and elapsed months while learners choose drafting approaches, respond to office actions with interviews or detailed arguments, decide on continuations, RCEs or PTAB appeals, and then review a final report with prosecution history, grant probability, time, cost and an estimated patent value; a status view can be opened at any time to reflect on prior decisions. The simulator turns doctrine into trade-offs—scope versus grantability, speed versus spend, argument versus amendment—so students practice reading office-action cues, balancing commercial coverage with risk, and articulating lessons learned from their own strategy path
